Arguments don't necessarily end when the conversation stops.
The 2025 meta-analysis of couple relationships and sleep found that greater partner conflict was associated with poorer overall sleep quality.
Some studies that couldn't be included in the pooled analysis also linked greater conflict with taking longer to fall asleep and waking more during the night, based on actigraphy.
Interestingly, greater self-disclosure was associated with better overall sleep quality.
So relationship tension and sleep can potentially interact rather than existing as completely separate parts of life.
Sometimes “never go to bed angry” isn't scientifically precise advice—but relationship stress really can accompany you into the night.
