Game Overview​

The apocalypse arrives through whispers, forged letters, and the quiet corruption of people who believe they are serving a greater good. Shadow of Forbidden Gods is a grand-strategy sandbox that casts you as an unseen evil working across a living fantasy map, not a general leading armies from the front. Rather than saving kingdoms from darkness, you cultivate that darkness: destabilizing courts, spreading forbidden faiths, awakening ancient powers, and preparing the world for catastrophe. Its mood is deliciously cruel and methodical, rewarding players who prefer manipulation and long-term planning over direct conquest.

Each turn sends agents, cultists, monsters, and compromised heroes across the map to infiltrate settlements, raise menace, recruit allies, s†éál relics, and advance the specific ambitions of your chosen god. Early schemes can be as subtle as bribing officials or poisoning a village’s stability, but success opens paths toward civil wars, necromantic outbreaks, volcanic disasters, magical winter, and nation-destroying invasions. The world’s rulers and heroes respond intelligently, investigating threats, defending their lands, and chasing your operatives when your secrecy slips. Progress depends on balancing risk against momentum, because a powerful agent can still be killed quickly if the forces of good identify the real danger.

Its strongest idea is that enemies are not merely units to defeat but personalities and political systems to exploit. A ruler can become consumed by greed, a noble can be pushed toward rebellion, and a celebrated hero can be driven mad or quietly turned into an asset of the shadow. Different dark gods, map conditions, agents, and unfolding crises make campaigns feel less like solving a fixed puzzle and more like engineering a uniquely awful alternate history. Fans of Crusader Kings-style intrigue, the asymmetric strategy of Evil Genius, or fantasy 4X games with a villainous twist find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should expect a dense but rewarding learning curve.
