A 2026 study surveyed 400 heterosexual women about actual and hypothetical experiences with partner infidelity.

Almost half reported having experienced a partner cheating.

Among those women, 43% stayed in the relationship afterward.

Researchers examined commitment, attachment, self-esteem, personality, and previous experiences with infidelity.

Interestingly, women's anticipated responses were associated particularly with previous infidelity experiences and extraversion.

The findings show why “If he cheated, I'd immediately leave” doesn't necessarily predict what someone will actually do when betrayal happens to her.
