When disclosure is met with understanding and acceptance, it can contribute to increased intimacy.
But the response is crucial.
The same disclosure met with ridicule, indifference, or judgment can have the opposite effect.
That's why intimacy isn't simply created by telling someone your secrets.
It's partly created by discovering what happens after they know them.
