Researchers recently examined how people distinguish romantic relationships from other close relationships.

Participants considered different features, including sexual behavior, sexual attraction, romantic attraction, and social norms.

The results showed that people's ideas about what makes a relationship “romantic” can involve multiple dimensions rather than one universal ingredient.

This is important because romance is often treated as though everyone recognizes it using exactly the same criteria.

Real relationships can be psychologically harder to categorize than simple labels suggest.

What makes something feel romantic may involve attraction, behavior, expectations, and the meaning people assign to the relationship.
