
Having someone you love nearby can certainly feel reassuring.
But an experiment comparing different forms of partner support found an interesting difference.
A partner merely being present was less effective at reducing experimental pain than actively providing support.
Supportive speech, touch, and speech combined with touch all performed better than passive presence.
This suggests that “I'm here” and actively showing someone you're there for them aren't necessarily psychologically identical.
Sometimes support needs to be communicated rather than simply assumed.
