Gratitude is usually associated with better romantic relationships, but the effect may depend partly on the balance of power between partners.
A 2024 study involving 825 people in romantic relationships examined gratitude, perceived partner responsiveness, relationship power, and satisfaction.
The connection between gratitude and perceived responsiveness was weaker among participants who reported having greater relationship power.
The link between responsiveness and relationship satisfaction was also weaker for those participants.
This suggests that even positive relationship behaviors don't necessarily operate identically when partners experience different levels of power.
