Stress and excitement activate physiological systems that can temporarily affect digestion and hunger.

For some people, acute stress suppresses appetite even when they haven't eaten.

Others respond to stress differently and may eat more.

This is why someone barely touching their food on a first date isn't necessarily bored or unhappy with the meal.

Sometimes the person really likes their date—their nervous system just isn't particularly interested in dinner.
