Common swifts spend extraordinary amounts of their lives in the air.
Tracking research found that some individuals remained airborne for around 10 months during their non-breeding period, with only extremely brief or potentially no landings.
They can feed while flying, and evidence suggests they can also sleep during flight.
For these birds, landing can be the exception rather than the normal state of daily life.
