
Mushrooms don't always rely entirely on existing wind to distribute their spores.
Research has shown that evaporative cooling around some mushrooms can cool nearby air. This creates small convection currents capable of helping carry spores away from the fruiting body.
The effect occurs on a tiny scale, but it can matter when the surrounding air is otherwise relatively still.
A mushroom can therefore help create part of the air movement needed to disperse its own spores.
