Researchers have demonstrated that bumblebees can learn relatively complex tasks through social observation.
In one experiment, bees learned how to manipulate a two-step puzzle box to reach a sugar reward after observing trained demonstrator bees.
Some individuals learned behavior that researchers had difficulty getting bees to discover independently.
The findings suggest that surprisingly sophisticated behaviors can spread socially even among insects.
