
If an avocado is still too firm to eat, place it in a paper bag at room temperature.
Adding a banana or apple can speed the process because these fruits release ethylene, a natural plant hormone involved in ripening. Loosely closing the bag helps concentrate the gas around the fruit.
Check the avocado regularly so it doesn't become overripe.
This speeds natural ripening rather than artificially softening the fruit with heat.
