When someone stands above a cloud or fog layer with the Sun behind them, their shadow can sometimes appear surrounded by colored rings.
This atmospheric optical phenomenon is called a glory. It forms through interactions between sunlight and tiny water droplets.
Aircraft passengers occasionally see one surrounding the airplane's shadow on clouds below.
A window seat can therefore provide an atmospheric display that people on the ground may have no way of seeing at the same moment.
