Scratching is a normal feline behavior with several functions.
It helps maintain the outer layers of the claws, stretches muscles, and leaves both visual and scent signals. Cats have scent glands around their paws that contribute to this marking behavior.
Providing suitable scratching surfaces gives indoor cats an appropriate place to perform something they are naturally motivated to do.
A scratching post isn't simply a substitute for furniture—it's equipment for a normal cat behavior.
