Some intense rain events are highly localized, meaning one community can experience a sudden downpour while another nearby receives much less rain.

Strong convective clouds can release enormous quantities of water within a short period. When rainfall intensity exceeds the ability of soil and drainage systems to absorb or carry the water away, flash flooding can develop rapidly.

Mountainous terrain can make these events particularly dangerous by concentrating runoff into valleys and channels.
