Plants don't obtain their food from soil in the way animals obtain food by eating. Through photosynthesis, they produce sugars using light, carbon dioxide, and water.
Their roots mainly need access to water, oxygen, and essential mineral nutrients. Systems such as hydroponics provide these without conventional soil.
Plants can therefore grow with their roots suspended in nutrient solutions or supported by alternative growing media.
