Cats have numerous muscles controlling their external ears, allowing them to turn and reposition each ear with remarkable precision.

The ears can move toward different sounds and help cats determine where noises originate without requiring the entire head to move first.

Ear position also contributes to feline body language, communicating states such as attention, relaxation, fear, or irritation.

Those small movements on top of a cat's head are part sensory equipment and part communication system.
