A seed doesn't always begin growing as soon as water becomes available. Many species have dormancy mechanisms that delay germination until environmental conditions become suitable.

Depending on the plant, germination may require particular temperatures, periods of cold, changes to the seed coat, light conditions, or other environmental signals.

Dormancy allows seeds to survive periods when immediately producing a young plant would have poor chances of success.
