Many overwatering problems happen because the growing medium remains wet for too long or the plant is watered again before its roots have enough access to air.
Roots require oxygen for normal function. Persistently waterlogged soil can reduce available oxygen and create conditions favorable to root damage and disease.
Drainage, potting medium, temperature, plant species, and pot size all influence how quickly moisture disappears.
