Dogs have a highly developed olfactory system that allows them to gather enormous amounts of information through scent.
During a walk, stopping to sniff isn't simply a delay between destinations. Smells can provide information about other animals, food, people, and changes in the surrounding environment.
Allowing appropriate opportunities to sniff can provide dogs with mental stimulation in addition to the physical movement of walking.
