Photography doesn't affect memory in only one direction. Constantly taking pictures without paying much attention to the scene can reduce memory for certain details.

However, deliberately choosing what to photograph—especially specific details—can direct attention toward parts of an experience and sometimes strengthen visual memory for them.

The difference appears to depend partly on how the camera is being used.
