Reports of animals falling during storms have occurred in different parts of the world. One leading explanation is that waterspouts or powerful storm updrafts can lift small animals from shallow water and transport them before dropping them elsewhere. Scientists can't verify every historical story of “animal rain,” so individual reports should be treated carefully.

However, strong atmospheric updrafts absolutely can lift surprisingly heavy objects. Weather doesn't manufacture frogs or fish in clouds—it can potentially relocate them. Sometimes, the strangest thing falling from the sky may have started on the ground.
