
Speaking style can shift depending on who is listening. People may subtly change pitch, speed, pronunciation, vocabulary, or accent when talking with friends, family, coworkers, or strangers. This process is known as communication accommodation and often happens automatically. It can help people establish social connection and make conversations smoother.
That's why the same person may sound surprisingly different on a work call than when talking with close friends. The voice adapts to the social environment.
