Remembering isn't exactly like opening a saved video. When a memory is recalled, it can temporarily become flexible before being stored again through a process called reconsolidation. New information or emotions may influence it during this process.

This helps explain why memories can gradually change over many years. Two people can sincerely remember the same event differently without either intentionally lying. Memory is less like replaying a recording and more like reconstructing a story.
