Simply imagining throwing a ball, playing an instrument, or performing a movement can activate parts of the brain involved in actually performing that action. This is why mental rehearsal is used by athletes, musicians, and performers.
Visualization alone can't replace physical practice, but research suggests it can complement training. The brain can rehearse an experience even when the body remains completely still. A movement doesn't always have to happen physically for the brain to practice it.
