When a star gets too close to a black hole, it's torn apart in a dramatic event called a tidal disruption event. Scientists have recently observed some black holes releasing powerful bursts of energy years after the initial event.

These delayed outbursts surprised astronomers because they weren't expected by earlier models. Researchers are still investigating why they occur. Even black holes continue to behave in unexpected ways.
