Researchers have found that the first few bites of a favorite food often produce the strongest sense of enjoyment. As people continue eating, the brain gradually becomes accustomed to the flavor, reducing the excitement.
This phenomenon is known as sensory-specific satiety. It helps explain why the first slice of pizza often seems more satisfying than the fifth. The food hasn't changed—your brain's response has. Enjoyment naturally decreases with repetition.
