Thousands of years ago, ancient civilizations such as the Maya and the Aztecs consumed chocolate as a bitter drink rather than a sweet treat. The beverage was made by grinding cacao beans and mixing them with water, spices, and sometimes chili peppers. It was considered a luxurious drink and was often reserved for royalty, warriors, and religious ceremonies.

Sugar wasn't added until chocolate reached Europe centuries later, where it gradually evolved into the sweet chocolate we know today. This rich history makes chocolate one of the world's oldest and most fascinating foods.
