The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to exist on Earth, and its body requires a massive heart to pump blood throughout its enormous frame. Its heart can weigh hundreds of kilograms and beat only a few times per minute when it dives. Despite their huge size, blue whales mainly feed on tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill.
Their incredible biology shows how life can adapt to extreme sizes in the ocean. The blue whale remains one of the greatest wonders of the natural world.
