Many people believe chameleons change color mainly to blend into their surroundings, but that's only part of the story. They actually change color to communicate with other chameleons, regulate their body temperature, and E×ρréšš emotions such as stress or excitement. Tiny crystals in specialized skin cells reflect different wavelengths of light, creating dramatic color changes.
A bright-colored chameleon may be trying to attract a mate or warn a rival to stay away. Their color-changing ability is one of the most fascinating adaptations in the animal kingdom.
