The wood frog has an incredible ability to survive freezing temperatures. During winter, much of its body can freeze, and its heartbeat and breathing can temporarily stop. The frog produces natural chemicals that protect its cells from damage caused by ice formation. When temperatures rise again, it slowly thaws and returns to normal activity.

This adaptation allows wood frogs to survive in extremely cold environments where many other animals could not. Scientists study these frogs to better understand freezing survival and medical preservation techniques.
