The universe contains an enormous number of stars, with scientists estimating there may be hundreds of billions of galaxies, each containing billions of stars. The Milky Way alone is estimated to contain around 100–400 billion stars. When combined across the observable universe, the number of stars is believed to exceed the number of grains of sand on all Earth's beaches.

Many of these stars have planets orbiting them, and scientists continue searching for worlds that may have conditions suitable for life. The scale of the universe remains one of the greatest mysteries in science.
