Horses only breathe through their nostrils and not their mouth at all! It’s a minor thing in the big picture, but my mind went boom!

Horses are what is known as obligatory nose breathers. In terms of anatomy, this is because the horse’s soft palate separates the airway from the mouth. In addition, horses - unlike many other mammals - can’t pant in order to cool themselves.
