Despite their reputation of being pesky but otherwise relatively harmless small insects, mosquitoes are the most dangerous animals in the world. With the ability to carry deadly diseases like malaria, Zika virus, West Nile virus, and dengue fever, the tiny blood-suckers indirectly kill between 750,000 to 1 million people each year.
The insects also far outnumber the human population, with 16,000 mosquitoes existing at any given point for every one person. Those wishing to avoid being bitten should wear insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing, and cover window and door openings with screens.
