Humans have long sought to order and organize the world. Efforts to do this in a scientific vein emerged in the 18th century, when Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus began systematically categorizing plants and animals.
According to typical taxonomies, bumblebees are considered insects. Makes sense, right? They have wings, six legs, a three-part body (head, thorax, abdomen), and an exoskeleton.
Unfortunately, like many other animal species, bumblebees are experiencing a rapid population decline, leading some scientists to worry that the pollinators are in danger of becoming extinct.
Strangely, the state of California can reclassify bumblebees as fish - but for a very good reason. Endangered species laws do not specifically mention insects as a protected class of animals. So, conservationists argued that California law allows for invertebrates, like bumblebees, to be classified with fish.
The aim of the move is to protect bumblebees from the agriculture industry.
