We all know that refreshing yet earthy smell of just fallen rain. It turns out that scent has a specific name: petrichor. And humans are very attuned to smelling it.
Most of us were told that human beings don't have great sniffers. When we think of the most talented smellers, we think of dogs and bears. However, elephants may, in fact, win the title for having the best sense of smell in the animal kingdom.
But humans aren't as far behind as we were led to believe. We can differentiate upwards of one trillion odors, which puts us in line with the smelling capabilities of rodents and dogs.
This is evident in our ability to pick up on that sweet, sweet smell of petrichor, the earthy scent accompanying rainfall on soil. In fact, humans can sense the smell at 5 parts per trillion, meaning we are 200,000 times better at detecting that scent than sharks are at smelling blood in the water.
