BENNIE Boatwright attended the Senate hearing called by the Justice and Human Rights Committee chaired by Sen. Francis Pangilinan on Wednesday morning.

Boatwright's presence was part of the process for the San Miguel import getting naturalized and be eligible to play as a Filipino citizen for the Gilas Pilipinas national team.

The bill seeking Boatwright's naturalization was later approved on the committee level following the hearing.

Boatwright was accompanied in the hearing by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Erika Dy and Gilas Pilipinas team manager Alfrancis Chua.

“I grew up in Southern California and there is a big Filipino community. Just growing up, I've had plenty of friends. I'm familiar with the culture just growing up,” said Boatwright.

“Two and a half years ago when I played in the PBA, I felt at home. As soon as I got off the plane, I appreciated everybody's support. I just love playing here. I love being here,” Boatwright added during the Senate hearing.

The hearing of Boatwright was on the same day that San Miguel will play against Terrafirma in the PBA 50th Season Commissioner's Cup.

The SBP hopes that Boatwright will be naturalized as soon as possible in time for the 2026 Asian Games where he could be eligible to play alongside Justin Brownlee.
