James Garfield, a low-class man who struggles to become president, is shot by Charles Guiteau just 200 days into his term. Guiteau, a crazed and narcissistic lawyer who believes he is worthy of high office, decides to assassinate him after being ignored. The series follows Garfield’s life from his difficult childhood to his fight against the corruption of the appointment system, while also exploring Guiteau’s madness from his claims to God to his mounting debts. Amid corrupt politicians like Roscoe Conkling and attempts at reform, Garfield’s death is caused not only by a bullet but also by medical malpractice. This event changes American history and brings Chester Arthur to power, while the nation is in shock.
