PCI-SIG, the standards body for the PCI interconnect technology, has formally released the PCI E×ρréšš (PCIe) 7.0 specification to its members, introducing details on the bandwidth of 128.0 GT/s (gigatransfers per second). This doubles the throughput of PCIe 6.0 and continues the organization’s cadence of bandwidth doubling every three years.
PCIe 7.0 aims to address the growing performance needs of AI/ML, 800G networking, hyperscale cloud infrastructure, and even quantum computing. The new standard supports a bi-directional bandwidth of up to 512 GB/s when using a full x16 lane configuration—a significant leap for future high-performance computing workloads.
