The Narrow Road to the Deep North 2025
In 1943, young Australian doctor Dorrigo Evans (Jacob Elwardi) is trapped in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp on the Burma Railway. He faces brutality from the Japanese commander, Major Nakamura (Shu Kasamatsu), and Captain Fukuhara (Masa Yamaguchi), but tries to keep his spirits up by treating the prisoners, including Sheephead Morton (Fabian McCallum) and Darkie Gardiner (Thomas Weatherall). In flashbacks, Dorrigo reflects on his failed romance with Amy Mulvaney (Odessa Young), a woman he met before the war. Their love was left unfulfilled when Amy married Keith Mulvaney (Simon Baker) and Dorrigo was sent off to war.The camp sees Dorigo form a deep friendship with Jimmy Bigelow (Edward Gayle) and Bonox Baker (Regan Mannix), but the constant death and suffering bring him to the brink of collapse. In 1980, Dorigo (Ciaran Hinds), now an elderly man, lives with his wife Ella (Heather Mitchell), but is still haunted by memories of Amy and the war. At the climax of the story, Dorigo is confronted with a truth about Amy’s fate that forces him to reevaluate his life.
