Steam just announced a 12% value-added tax on games, DLCs, and digital items bought on the platform. However, there’s still a bit of good news as the new tax rate won’t take effect until June 1st.
Say you’re buying a game initially priced at ₱1,000; after the 12% VAT, the total comes in at ₱1,120. This price hike comes on the heels of the law signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that imposes a 12% VAT on digital services.
Steam has mentioned that the 12% VAT will be inclusive, meaning that the prices that you see on the platform already have the added tax incorporated. It remains to be seen if this development will have a substantial effect on games purchased through the platform.
While we do support the government’s plan to level the playing field among the local and international tech industries, we still think that there could be a better plan that doesn’t involve burdening the consumer with added costs.
What do you think? Is the hike justified?
