Recent claims on Chinese social media suggest that Palawan was historically part of China and was called “Zheng He Island” after the 15th-century Chinese explorer. However, Philippine authorities and historians have strongly rejected this, stating there is no historical or legal basis for such a claim.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) emphasized that Zheng He’s voyages do not equate to sovereignty. Former Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio also debunked the claim, stating there is no evidence that Zheng He ever visited the Philippines.

The Philippine Coast Guard has labeled the narrative as disinformation, warning that it could be used to justify further territorial incursions. The public has reacted with outrage, seeing this as another attempt by China to assert dominance in the region.

As tensions over the South China Sea continue, the Philippines remains firm in protecting its sovereignty, backed by historical facts and internation
al law.
