MANILA, Philippines — The police Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) apprehended 39 people and seized 7,900 registered subscriber identity module cards last month in an intensified crackdown on the îllégâl sale of SIM cards.
ACG director Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang said the suspects were arrested in 31 entrapment operations across the country from Jan. 1 to 31.
Among the suspects is a minor, who was turned over to the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
“The ACG remains resolute in its commitment to eradicating cybercrime and strengthening the digital security through law enforcement efforts and community education initiatives,” Yang said in a statement.
Of the number of confiscated SIM cards, 19 were found to be linked to e-wallets and bank accounts.
The suspects are facing cases for violating Republic Act 11934, the SIM Registration Act, and RA 12010, the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act, both in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Law.
Yang urged the public to refrain from purchasing SIM cards, warning they could face arrest and prosecution.
