The House of Representatives Tripartite Committee has moved to issue show cause orders against several social media personalities who skipped the hearing on the spread of fake news and disinformation on Tuesday, February 4.Manila 6th District Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. initiated a motion to issue a show cause order against Elizabeth Joey Cruz due to her "contemptible" excuse letter, which was deemed "disrespectful."Abang Lingkod Partylist Rep. Joseph Stephen Paduano moved to issue a show cause order against Jun Abines, who was advised by his lawyer not to attend the hearing.Paduano also moved to issue a show cause order against Mark Lopez, who declined the invitation, claiming that the premise of the inquiry had no legal basis and could not stand on legal grounds.Paduano continued with a motion to issue a show cause order against former press secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles, who declined the invitation and questioned the legality of the inquiry and the proposed legislation, claiming it violated the constitutional guarantee of free speech. Paduano also moved to consult the legal department regarding a possible disbarment case against Cruz-Angeles.Additionally, motions were approved to issue show cause orders against Richard Mata, Aaron Peña (who categorically denied being ρáíd by POGO operators or drug lords), Krizette Chu, Suzanne Batalla (also known as IamShanwein), and Ethel Garcia.
