Less than a year ago, Ysabel Jurado was an eviction attorney, and a tenant rights advocate hoping to make a positive change in the community.
She launched a grassroots campaign from her family’s home in Highland Park, California. But as election night votes were counted, Jurado took a major leap to become part of the Los Angeles City Council. Jurado had nearly a 10-point lead over incumbent Kevin DeLeon. "I can’t believe it," she said. "It is very exciting, very promising."
On Thursday (U.S. time), Jurado declared victory in the polls.
