Did you know that dogs were used extensively by both sides on the WWI Western Front as messengers, sentries and to lay down telegraph wires. One of their more compassionate tasks was to venture out into no mans land and lie with a wounded soldier to comfort and keep him warm until he could be rescued after dark. Over 1 million dogs died on the battlefields of WWI.
