Russian Foreign Ministry: Russia Will Take Action If US Missiles Stay in the Philippines
September 23

Moscow (Sputnik) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that if the United States' intermediate and short-range missiles are not relocated from the Philippines back to the US, Russia will take all necessary military measures to for a counterbalance.

Regarding reports on the change in the US's intention to return the missile systems deployed during exercises in the Philippines, Ryabkov commented, "Based on the assessment of the situation and expert analysis, we will make all necessary decisions. We have certainly taken note of these alarming reports."

In conclusion, he stated, "We will take all necessary practical measures, including directly establishing balance in the military sphere."

In July, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi informed his Philippine counterpart at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Vietnam that the US deployment of mid-range missiles in the Philippines would create regional tensions and confrontation, leading to an arms race. Wang Yi pointed out that such a situation is not in the interests of the Filipino people. He also noted that if the Philippines fails to fulfill its obligations to de-escalate the tensions in the South China Sea, Beijing will take decisive response measures.

Previously, a spokesperson for the US Indo-Pacific Command told Sputnik that the US plans to deploy mid-range missile systems in the Asia-Pacific region by the end of the year. During the US-Philippine joint exercises in April, the US deployed the MRC Typhon mid-range missile system in the Philippines. Meanwhile. A few days earlier, leaders of Japan, the US, and the Philippines held talks in Washington, where they issued a joint statement committing to support a "peaceful and open" Indo-Pacific region, and leverage the strength of the QUAD and the AUKUS. The three countries also agreed to develop trilateral defense cooperation through joint maritime training and exercises.
