Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) Massive Data Breach

Manila, Philippines – Yesterday, September 7, 2024, a significant data breach occurred at Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC). The leaked information includes sensitive details such as email logs, account numbers, reference numbers, balance amounts, and more. The häçk was claimed by the Group Deathnote häçkers International (DNH).
  • Deathnote häçkers (DNH) was formed in 2015, but officially founded in 2016. It initially started as a häçking tutorial page, where tricks and tips were shared. However, it quickly evolved into a häçking group when the founder acquired knowledge in unethical häçking, programming, and SEO. After discovering the international group "Lulzsec" and gaining inspiration from Lulzsec's Operation CODE:51, an operation focused on leaking any desired information, the founder initiated his own CODE:51. • Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) is in the business of developing and operating toll roads in the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam. It is the biggest toll road developer in the Philippines, with a current portfolio of tollways that includes the North Luzon E×ρréššway (NLEX), the Subic-Clark-Tarlac E×ρréššway (SCTEX), the Manila-Cavite Toll E×ρréššway (CAVITEX), Cavite-Laguna E×ρréššway (CALAX), Cebu-Cordova Link E×ρréššway (CCLEX) and the NLEX Connector Road (NLEX Connector).

MPTC also has investments in Indonesia via PT Nusantara whose operations comprise of toll roads, ports, water, and energy generation and distribution; and in Vietnam’s CII Bridges & Roads Investment Joint Stock Company that is primarily engaged in the construction, development and operations of urban infrastructure.
In a Facebook post, DNH stated that they successfully breached MPTC's systems and obtained extensive user data. The group exploited vulnerabilities in the Easytrip system, a popular electronic toll collection (ETC) platform used in the Philippines. The breach is particularly concerning given the recent plans by the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) to merge the Easytrip and Autosweep systems. This consolidation would have created a single, unified ETC system, potentially increasing the risk of a large-scale data breach.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of data breaches and the need for organizations to prioritize data protection. As the investigation into the MPTC breach continues, it is crucial to understand the root causes of the attack and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The extent of the data breach and the potential impact on MPTC customers and operations remain unclear at this time. The company is currently investigating the incident and working to assess the full scope of the compromised data.
