Yet, while much of Southeast Asia gets lost in Washington’s focus on competition with China, some of the countries that were part of Harris’s portfolio, namely the Philippines, have assumed roles as some of the most critical foreign policy issues for the United States. The Philippines has become a poster child for pushing back against Beijing’s aggression, and Washington has supported its treaty ally to improve its defense capabilities.
