Why getting Quiboloy is critical for the Marcos-Romualdez clan

ONLY if you have been living on another planet would you believe that the Philippine National Police (PNP) a few days ago had mobilized 2,000 policemen and raided religious leader Apollo Quiboloy's compound merely in order to uphold the rule of law by serving warrants for his arrest. The army general in charge of Eastern Mindanao even announced the other day that "four companies" of soldiers — about 800 — would help hunt for the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) leader in the religious organization's compound near Davao City.

HAD Vice President Sara Duterte simply answered Sen. Risa Hontiveros' query about her book, she may just have been spared from all the fanfare and social media noise about her book "Isang Kaibigan." All she needed to say was that the book was about friendship.
And that while her office is requesting for government to subsidize its printing and distribution to children, and that she would be extremely grateful if the Senate would endorse it to the House of Representatives, that in the end, it is the prerogative of the Senate.
That would have been the end of the story.
Instead, Duterte went on the offensive. She accused Hontiveros of politicizing the budget hearing. She further alleged that Hontiveros' line of questioning was primarily triggered by the fact that Duterte's name appeared in the book, which would be distributed to children. And worst of all, Duterte practically accused Hontiveros of being an ingrate for turning her back on former president Duterte after he helped her win in the 2016 elections.

VP Sara's outburst has only placed her book front, top and center with many people, not just the senators; now everyone is curious about what was in that book that is worth P10 million of people's hard-earned monies.
And now we know. The book is a 16-page illustrated fable telling the story of an owl who lost his home but was helped by his friends to recover from the tragedy. Upfront, there is nothing extraordinary or controversial in this book, which Duterte said would be freely distributed to children in school to help them appreciate reading. After all, this is a noble intention and would be laudable until people began going through the pages, reading the texts and scrutinizing the graphic images.
And it is here that people began noticing things that were not right. Some people alluded to the possibility that the material may have actually been plagiarized, which Duterte has vehemently denied.
Others pointed to the apparently glaring misuse of words. Two examples: the book appeared to refer to "Banahaw" as a tree when it said, "Sa lilim ng luntiang mga dahon ng Banahaw"; and it appeared to have used "bagbag" when it said, "Sa kanyang pag-iisa nabagbag ang kanyang damdamin sa kanyang sinapit," when what would have been more appropriate was the word "nabagabag."
It is possible that these are mere typos, where "Banahaw" was actually meant to be "anahaw," a palm with broad leaves, and "nabagabag" was the word originally used.

However, the diehard Duterte supporters (DDS) started haranguing those who questioned the appropriateness of these words in the book.

My take on this issue is simple. The book is designed for children. Its main goal is to cultivate in them a love for reading. Thus, it should use words that are clear, precise and non-misleading.

Indeed, there is the word "bagbag," which, in addition to its being used to refer to the act of breaking rocks, of soil erosion or washout, and of wreckage or loss of ships at sea, can also apply to the state of being emotionally affected like in "nakakabagbag-damdamin." However, it is also a fact that it is more pervasive and relatable to use "nabagabag ang kanyang damdamin," and this is what children would probably hear more being used in ordinary conversation. Using "nabagabag" doesn't make the use of "nabagbag" wrong. It is just less confusing to children. And for a book that is designed to make them appreciate reading, there is a primordial duty to ensure that the words used are relatable, familiar and part of their everyday conversations.

The use of the word "Banahaw" can actually be rationalized if it refers to the mountain, not to the tree. "Sa lilim ng luntiang mga dahon ng Banahaw" can, in fact, be construed as "Under the shades of the green forest canopy of Mt. Banahaw," with "mga dahon" being liberally construed as referring not to the foliage of a tree, but the forest canopy in a mountain. Had the DDS used this as a line of defense, it would have been more acceptable.

But the cultish DDS doubled down on their claim that there is a tree named Banahaw and even accused those of us who insisted that there is none, of being ignorant, stupid and having low IQ. They found ammunition in an academic paper authored by two scholars from the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) and a third one from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that was published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Management last year, which mentioned a tree species found in Banahaw the scientific name of which is Dacrycarpus cumingii (Parl.) de Laub. and whose common name the authors used was Banahaw Igem.

The DDS had a field day parading this as if it was enough to make factual their lie that Banahaw is the name of the tree. These people are full of audacity to distort a scientific fact. The common name of Dacrycarpus cumingii (Parl.) de Laub. is Banahaw Igem. The name of the tree is not Banahaw, but Banahaw Igem, in the same way that the common name of Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis (A. Chev.) Silba is Benguet Pine, and not just Benguet.

Igem is a tree that grows in montane forests found in higher elevations. Banahaw Igem grows in Mount Banahaw, even as Dacrycarpus cumingii (Parl.) de Laub can also be found in other places in the Philippines, as well as in Borneo and Sumatra.

One DDS blogger patronizingly insulted me, telling me to be humble enough to admit I was wrong.

I have, on many occasions, admitted to being wrong, including the moment I publicly apologized for enabling former president Duterte early in his term.

Not on this one, though. It may do them well to know that, unknown to them, I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in forestry, where we actually studied trees.

THERE was a time when I decided that I had had enough of Rodrigo Roa Duterte and that I would just move on and write about hopeful things. In fact, while I was critical of his two-week absence from circulation, I also heaved a small sigh of relief as it gave us a break from his oppressive presence. In hindsight, it was actually a pleasant experience not having him for a prolonged period. It gave us time to breathe and exhale.
Frankly, having him around at a time like this, when we are in the middle of a pandemic, is not reassuring at all. Thus, it can even be counted as a blessing that he was temporarily out of sight.
It was such a welcome break from his stressful presence that I was even given a chance to imagine a world without him. I was pulling imaginary strings, thanking whatever muses were responsible that by 2022 he would no longer be our suffering. I was already focused on writing about alternative models for learning to address our problems in education knowing that eventually the Duterte brand would expire.
Every political leader admittedly brings his or her own brand of terror, but Duterte is a class of his own. The idolatry around him is so terrifying that when he orders people killed, a huge majority of a predominantly Catholic county cheers. He drives people to mindless worship that, while on their own they do not trust China, they fall silent when he declares his best-friend-forever relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Leaders are supposed to inspire people to dream. Duterte has rallied his diehard troops around him to turn our nightmares into their dreamlike inspirations.
He has turned everything into a joke. He proudly announced having molested their house helper as a youth, and then claimed it was just a joke. He tried groping another house helper during his birthday celebration, and his apologists spun it as just an innocent joke. And his loyal minions take these excuses as if they are biblical truths.
It wouldn’t be surprising if we are soon treated to a spin about his retreat from a debate with retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio on the issue of the West Philippine Sea, a challenge that he himself provoked. When Carpio accepted it, Duterte made a 180-degree turn and used as an excuse his Cabinet having advised him against it, and thus he passed on the baton to his spokesman Harry Roque Jr. Perhaps this is the joke. Or it is when Roque appeared to have pivoted toward Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo whom he wants to debate instead. The joke could even be when former spokesman Salvador Panelo volunteered to debate with Carpio. It is simply apropos that the names of Roque and Panelo have entered the fray. Perhaps it was deliberate, or not, but it is now easier to spin what can be construed as pure and unadulterated weaseling out by the President into simply another satire courtesy of one who has practically defended his embarrassing moments by turning his tenure into a six-year joke.
Perhaps, the President and his apologists and spinners take comfort in the thought that the joke is always on us, his loyal critics. But what they are missing is that it also strikes even harder his diehard Duterte supporters, or DDS, who defend his actions with utter sincerity by taking him seriously. And when they are told that it is just a joke, they are pushed into taking on a confused state of mind, of being desensitized to a point that they lose the ability for autonomy and reason. It would be interesting to look into the states of mind of the DDS in the future and the damage which their idolatry of Duterte have inflicted on them and their brains.
Take for example his threat to ride a jet ski carrying the Philippine flag, braving the waters of the West Philippine Sea to assert our claim. This is a line that was taken by his supporters as a symbol of bravery, of a courageous man. This inspired his supporters not only to vote for him but to image him as a demigod. That was the dominant narrative, and while I for one thought that he was not serious, I was drowned out by a loyal base that celebrated his bravado like a blessing in contrast to their wimpy image of Duterte’s predecessor, President Benigno S. Aquino 3rd.
And now that he’s saying that it was all a joke, that people who believed him are simply stupid, he forgot the entire logic of the political impact of what he did. Actually, critics were not convinced that he would dare ride a jet ski on the choppy open waters of the storm-prone West Philippine Sea. It was actually his supporters among the 16 million who voted for him who believed him. Thus, when he says people who believed his campaign joke are stupid, then he just practically called many of his DDS stupid.
But then again, this would never have any effect on the DDS. These are people who would swim in shark-infested waters to support the President. These are people who would never blame Duterte even when their loved ones die of Covid-19 or are killed in an îllégâl arrest. They would blame the virus or China or the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army, but not Duterte.
But there is one hopeful thing about jokes that may just bite Duterte where it hurts. We Filipinos are known for turning our miseries into jokes. We are all by nature Bakhtinian — we can use laughter as a form of resistance to cope with disaster. Every time Duterte defends his offensive speech and actions by telling us these are just jokes, he is practically admitting that he is just spinning the nightmares that he himself has caused.
